Whole Life Costs of Passivhaus
This technical insight by Encraft's Sarah Price and Helen Brown shows that under sensible scenarios and maintenance regimes passivhaus homes typically cost between 2% and 5% less over their lifetimes than equivalent homes built using standard construction methods. The critical parameter making the difference in whole life Passivhaus costs is the maintenance cost of building services.
The paper considers whole life costs of four different Passivhaus designs, and accounts for both capital costs and running costs over 30, 60 and 100 year lifetimes. Future costs are discounted using Treasury rates to give comparable net present total lifetime costs for each scenario.
