Improving the maintenance and refurbishment of our housing stock is crucial for reducing carbon emissions and achieving net zero goals. The Construction Leadership Council estimates that retrofitting the UK housing stock would require a minimum of £500 billion over the next two decades. While a whole house retrofit offers the best energy reduction and comfort outcomes, it is a complex task that may need to be carried out over several years to be practical.
The Passivhaus standard, which includes a retrofit standard called EnerPHit, addresses challenges related to working with existing buildings by relaxing certain criteria. Proper sequencing and decision-making in the early phases of a retrofit project are vital to ensure that the full potential of the retrofit is realized and to prevent unintentional "carbon lock-in" – a situation where the project inadvertently perpetuates high carbon emissions.
