This masterclass explains the strategy of whole-house retrofit embracing the building fabric, building services and renewable energy systems, in order to achieve deep cuts in the fuel use, fuel costs and carbon dioxide emissions. Whole-house retrofit can be completed all at once or in stages, according to a plan for the dwelling. The unit deals with: assessing dwellings; understanding occupants’ objectives; evaluating constraints, opportunities and improvement options; specifying improvements; managing interactions between measures (at corners, junctions, edges and interfaces) to improve air tightness, reduce thermal bridging and ensure efficiency; arranging installation and communicating with installers; supervision, quality assurance and handover procedures; and following-up with monitoring, post construction reviews and post occupancy evaluation.
