PH Software Essentials Course by Target Zero
Date: 10 December 2014 | Time: 3 consecutive days |
Location: Flexible Meetings, Birchwood, Warrington | Cost: £450 |
This course aims to teach you about Passivhaus tools such as PHPP, 3D Sketchup DesignPH plugin and thermal modelling software.
Pre-requisites:
laptop and Microsoft ® Excel 2007 or later, CD drive or USB port
- Own version of PHPP 8 (2013)
- Own version of DesignPH plugin
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft ® Excel
- Google/Trimble SketchUp 8 up to Version 8.0.14 is preferred Download SketchUp 8 Free
- Thermal Bridging Software FLIXO Energy Plus – Demo version installed Download here
For Day One & Two, your own registered version of PHPP8 and DesignPH is required. The Software can be purchased from PHI.
Contents:
DAY 1 – Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) Software Workshop
With the help of the PHPP required for quality assurance calculations can be performed simply and clearly. Included are eg databases for passive house certified components such as windows, glazing and ventilation systems and simplified input functions for surfaces with assignment of U-values. This part provides an overview of the calculation method and, with examples provides an introduction to the work methodology. In the form of lectures and practical exercises you will learn and practice the use of PHPP for a dwelling project that you design in class.
- Introduction to the methodology with PHPP
- Principle of heating balance in accordance with DIN EN ISO 13790
- Energy reference area, envelope surface, volumes
- Transmission heat losses
- Solar heat gains and influence of shading
- Calculation of ventilation heat losses
- Influence of building airtightness
- Calculation of annual heating and building heating
- Domestic hot water demand and solar water heating
- Primary energy characteristic value for heating, hot water, consumables and household electricity demand
- Summer case: temporary shading, natural and mechanical ventilation, calculate the frequency of overheating

DAY 2 – Sketchup DesignPH Plugin
Participants will learn how to use designPH for the design and certification of Passive House buildings. Participants will be guided step-by-step through the building design process, from building model creation to exporting to PHPP. A case study will provide participants with practical experience in completing and documenting a designPH model for building certification. What’s covered:
- introduction and practice of Google Sketchup tools along with some exercises.
- Manual Energy Balance calculation as to understand principals behind the Plugin.
- DesignPH drawing exercise.
- TFA, Fabric Elements, U-Values, Climate, Components.
- Using PHPP 8.5 import/export tool.
- PHPP 8.5 overview and adjustment after import.

DAY 3 – Thermal Modelling – Workshop
This part provides you with the knowledge on how to use the software and how to analyse thermal bridges in order to determine the psi-value and temperature factors. This workshop is suited to beginners who are new to Thermal Modelling. They aim to impart a basic understanding of how the software can be used to analyse thermal bridges, and how to calculate Psi-values taking into consideration the boundary conditions set by national standards and EN ISO 10211. CONTENT:
- Boundary conditions of EN ISO 10211
- Calculating the psi-value Ψ
- Calculation of the fRSI temperature factor to determine mould growth
- Practical instruction.
- Foundation Detail in accordance to ISO EN ISO 10211.
- Calculation with > 2 conditions
- Window Installation Detail
- Heat flow representation
- Entering thermal bridge areas
- Input of boundary conditions
Dates:
- Dec 10th – PHPP Workshop
- Dec 11th – PH Modelling with Google Sketchup DesignPH plugin
- Dec 12th – Thermal Bridging Software Training
