It's not easy for a retrofit project to go beyond EnerPHit and achieve Passivhaus standard, let alone Passivhaus Plus - but that's what Ecospheric are aiming for with these two Victorian semi-detached homes in Chorlton, Manchester.
Ecospheric have gone to painstaking lengths to preserve the facade and make the existing structure airtight. They've kept conservation and enhancement of the original architecture and architectural features at the heart of the project, even incorporating stained glass. Design life of all components is set at 25 years or above and breathability is designed into every external wall, floor and roof. With the help of solar panels and the latest innovations in heating and ventilation, the houses will produce 25% more energy than consumed. The homes, named Ingleside and Woodleigh, promise to produce incredibly low bills and minimal maintenance that outperforms over 99% of new builds and any property of its era worldwide.
