Technical Guidance - UK Climate Data

Category: Guidance

The UK has 22 climate data sets which are included within the Passivhaus Planning Package (PHPP). These datasets are used in all certified Passivhaus buildings within the UK. The datasets have been generated using Met Office data and ratified by the Passive House Institute.

Additional data sets are now also available from the following weather stations: Northolt, Swansea, Charterhall, Oban, Inverness, Skye (Lusa) and Wick. Please contact your certifier if your project is in one of these areas.

Please note that climate zones and reference zones are intended as initial guidance. Depending on the project location a different climate dataset from another climate zone might actually be more representative of the local climate conditions. For building design, the appropriate reference location should be determined using the auxiliary calculation available in PHPP (see section 14.6 of the manual for PHPP 10), regardless of the climate zone.

For more information please contact your building certifier.

Region 1 – Central London

Because of the ‘heat island’ effect in London’s centrally located boroughs the following boroughs, highlighted in blue on the map below, should use Region 1 – Central London:

Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster, Camden, Islington, City of London, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Lewisham, Southwark, Lambeth, Wandsworth

It is recommended that all other London boroughs should adopt Region 2 – Thames Valley.
