Thermal Image UK carries out air tightness tests and thermal imaging on new and old buildings looking for heat loss. The company was set up in 2008 by Tom Barbour and carries out surveys on a range of domestic and non-domestic buildings. Tom’s motivation is limiting climate change through better buildings, and he has been an advocate of improved building standards and quality control for a number of years. More recently, the realisation that Passivhaus not only sets a higher energy design standard but that you get built what was designed, has led to Tom becoming a strong advocate of Passivhaus.

Thinking Buildings

Tim Martel

Tim is a freelance Chartered Architectural Technologist, Passivhaus Designer and Retrofit Co-ordinator. He is an expert in PHPP and is the author of the AECB PHribbon, an add-on to PHPP that speeds up data entry, checks PHPPs and calculates the Embodied CO2 of buildings. Embodied CO2 is becoming important as the grid decarbonises and heating gradually moves towards decarbonising. What is left is mostly the Embodied CO2 of the building. He offers calculations using the software and he also sells the software on behalf of the AECB (via his own website below). He offers advanced PHPPs that use ‘variants’, a very useful standard feature from the Passivhaus Institute, that allows you to explore different options in PHPP, e.g. different roof types, different wall types or different retrofit strategies. He has also created automated sensitivity testing in PHPPs, design studies which explore the effect of changing individual parameters and also the effect of combining them together.

Ty Eco

Tŷ Eco (Welsh for Eco House) produces an economical, panelised Passivhaus building system. We do not use polyurethane, EPS (polystyrene) or any other oil-based products to insulate our wall, ceiling or intermediate-floor panels – from the slab up, the building system is sustainable, renewable and/or recyclable. Our sister company - Minera Roof Trusses - has been producing engineered timber products since 1977. Utilising their extensive manufacturing experience, we have engineered a high-quality building system that can be easily supplied to site and erected quickly with a finish ensured through the Passivhaus quality assurance process. Tŷ Eco is currently constructing a prototype bungalow with a view to achieving Passivhaus accreditation (April 2021).
