Our reputation is being built on providing simple and stunning design solutions for individual client needs. We are concerned with ideas of sustainability through the use of energy efficient design solutions, detailing and technology, the choice of materials, the interaction of the building in its specific environment and the life-use of the building. Delivering buildings that future generations will enjoy and appreciate is the key to our thinking, and our buildings have a continuity of tradition in their design that makes them appropriate to their natural and built surroundings. We produce buildings appropriate for the local context, using traditional materials and modern techniques in a contemporary way to produce one off design solutions and buildings that complement our natural and built environments.

Derrie O'Sullivan Architects

Huddersfield

The Passivhaus approach to building design offers a tried and tested sustainable strategy which is meaningful because it is measurable in its use of energy and has no equal in our temperate climate. The methodology employs a combination of super insulation, appropriate areas of superbly designed triple glazed windows and doors for optimum beneficial solar gain, air tight construction with a heat recovery ventilation system ( MVHR) to achieve a space heating consumption of less than 15kWh/m2yr: which is vastly superior in comparison to the current UK Buildings Regulations which is in the order of 120kWh/m2yr. Passivhaus is the most cost effective way to save our finite energy resources and offers a high quality of thermal comfort for the people who use and live in the buildings.

Gresford Architects Ltd

Oxford

Gresford Architects are based in London and Oxford and seek to create buildings that are thoughtful, practical, sustainable and beautiful. We are interested in how spaces (and the buildings that create them) make us feel; how every decision that goes into creating a space – the materiality (surfaces, joints, planes, textures), the positioning of the windows and doors, of lighting and heating – must be carefully considered to allow the perfect marriage of the poetic and the practical. We have a fundamental belief in the importance of building in a sustainable manner, so that the buildings we create last for generations, are efficient in their use of materials and energy (in both construction and use) and are comfortable and pleasant places to be. We have a Certified Passivhaus Designer among our staff and will soon be recognised as a Certified Passivhaus Designer as a practice. We believe that the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) is a tool that should be used to help design and inform the creation of new buildings from the outset, and encourage our clients to see the long term benefits of the early adoption of PHPP modelling on their projects. We also work with a wide range of experienced Passivhaus consultants, contractors and subcontractors, and can thus help our clients put together the right team to deliver their projects.

Grosvenor Restoration Ltd

Lichfield

Grosvenor Restoration supply the latest Technology LandVac Tempered Vacuum Insulated Double Glazing. Using the principle of the vacuum flask with which we are all familiar, the two panes of glass are separated by a 0.3mm space from which air has been extracted to create a high vacuum. Without air or gas between the panes, heat and sound transmission is so reduced that a thermal insulation value of 0.5W/m2.K is achieved in a unit only 8.3mm thick. The slim construction and lower weight (compared to triple glazing), make it suitable for both new-build or retro-glazing into existing windows. The absence of desiccant to control moisture build-up, enables a guarantee of 15 years and life expectancy in excess of 25 years.

Pen Y Coed Construction & Insulation

Welshpool

From Passive House design and construction to high quality joinery finishes, we pride ourselves in creating beautiful and sustainable buildings. With over 25 years' experience, we prioritise a 'Fabric First' approach that starts at the design stage, using materials and products that maximise the performance and energy efficiency of the building. Our timber frame houses begin life in our factory in Wales as fully engineered, insulated and air-tight closed panels. The panelised units are then transported to site where a weather protected structure can be assembled in a few days. The materials in our build systems are predominantly timber based and procured locally where possible. By using Warmcel cellulose fibre insulation along with timber and woodfibre lining boards, timber I-beams, timber windows, and timber cladding, carbon is locked-in to create a sustainable building that is healthy, comfortable and enjoyable to live in. Warmcel has also been awarded a Nature Plus Certificate. Full technical information is available on our website: pycgroup.co.uk and warmcel.co.uk.

Tim Martel

Tim is a freelance Chartered Architectural Technologist, Passivhaus Designer and Retrofit Co-ordinator. He is an expert in PHPP and is the author of the AECB PHribbon, an add-on to PHPP that speeds up data entry, checks PHPPs and calculates the Embodied CO2 of buildings. Embodied CO2 is becoming important as the grid decarbonises and heating gradually moves towards decarbonising. What is left is mostly the Embodied CO2 of the building. He offers calculations using the software and he also sells the software on behalf of the AECB (via his own website below). He offers advanced PHPPs that use ‘variants’, a very useful standard feature from the Passivhaus Institute, that allows you to explore different options in PHPP, e.g. different roof types, different wall types or different retrofit strategies. He has also created automated sensitivity testing in PHPPs, design studies which explore the effect of changing individual parameters and also the effect of combining them together.
