Gresford Architects Ltd

Oxford

Gresford Architects are based in London and Oxford and seek to create buildings that are thoughtful, practical, sustainable and beautiful. We are interested in how spaces (and the buildings that create them) make us feel; how every decision that goes into creating a space – the materiality (surfaces, joints, planes, textures), the positioning of the windows and doors, of lighting and heating – must be carefully considered to allow the perfect marriage of the poetic and the practical. We have a fundamental belief in the importance of building in a sustainable manner, so that the buildings we create last for generations, are efficient in their use of materials and energy (in both construction and use) and are comfortable and pleasant places to be. We have a Certified Passivhaus Designer among our staff and will soon be recognised as a Certified Passivhaus Designer as a practice. We believe that the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) is a tool that should be used to help design and inform the creation of new buildings from the outset, and encourage our clients to see the long term benefits of the early adoption of PHPP modelling on their projects. We also work with a wide range of experienced Passivhaus consultants, contractors and subcontractors, and can thus help our clients put together the right team to deliver their projects.

Method Architecture is Edinburgh based practice with a focus on domestic architecture. Designing to Passivhaus standards is part of an ecological approach to architecture. As the most rigorous assessment of energy in use for buildings this is key tool to making buildings comfortable while reducing the environmental impacts of construction. In the context of a climate emergency, architecture could be defined as the responsible use of the world’s finite resources for the greatest benefit of society. Passivhaus brings some scientific rigour to a profession based in art, and gives a reliable metric for the energy performance of buildings.

Mike Whitfield Construction Ltd

Hereford

Mike Whitfield Construction Ltd is based in South Herefordshire. Mike first worked on a carefully designed energy efficient building in 1996, and since then has been on a steadily improving journey. In 2005 we were main contractors on the conversion of 2 barns into offices for the sustainable architects Architype, a project which won the 2007 RIBA Sustainability Award. By the time PH became known in the UK, we were already using many of the principles, and in 2010 when we started our first project that had been designed using PHPP, it was a natural progression for us. Since then we have worked almost exclusively on retrofits, extensions and new builds to PH principles. Mike has spoken on construction methods and detailing at AECB and UK Passivhaus conferences.

Pen Y Coed Construction & Insulation

Welshpool

From Passive House design and construction to high quality joinery finishes, we pride ourselves in creating beautiful and sustainable buildings. With over 25 years' experience, we prioritise a 'Fabric First' approach that starts at the design stage, using materials and products that maximise the performance and energy efficiency of the building. Our timber frame houses begin life in our factory in Wales as fully engineered, insulated and air-tight closed panels. The panelised units are then transported to site where a weather protected structure can be assembled in a few days. The materials in our build systems are predominantly timber based and procured locally where possible. By using Warmcel cellulose fibre insulation along with timber and woodfibre lining boards, timber I-beams, timber windows, and timber cladding, carbon is locked-in to create a sustainable building that is healthy, comfortable and enjoyable to live in. Warmcel has also been awarded a Nature Plus Certificate. Full technical information is available on our website: pycgroup.co.uk and warmcel.co.uk.

T2 Architects Ltd

Winchester

T2 architects is an award winning, design-led practice, specialising in progressive housing design. We have chosen to do one thing and to do it well; to design great places to live. To achieve this, we have built a team of experts in architectural design, sustainability, planning, and conservation. This includes having our own in-house certified Passivhaus Designer, MRTPI Planning Consultant, and an accredited Conservation Architect. Having these disciplines working directly together allows us to offer a more comprehensive service to our clients. We listen to our clients, analyse their site, create design options to fulfil their brief, ultimately deliver buildings we are all proud of. We work with a wide range of Clients across the country and work hard to understand their individual needs. We have good experience of working with Local Authorities, Developers and House Builders, and individual Homeowners. We fuse modern design and building practices with our respect for tradition, creating buildings that are of their time, of today. We create architecture which is context driven, robust, distinctive, sustainable and profitable. We advocate designing buildings that reduce operational energy consumption, and provide a comfortable environment for the occupants of the building. We are currently delivering a number of low energy projects to Passivhaus and AECB building standards, as well as having completed projects to BREEAM, including up to Excellent level. We are delighted to be members of the Passivhaus Trust, in addition to being an RIBA Chartered Practice, as well as being members of the Good Homes Alliance and AECB. Our approach is unpretentious and straight talking. We like to keep things simple.

The DHaus Company Ltd

London

The DHaus Company is an experimental design and architectural practice. Our practice draws inspiration from experimental mathematical formulae and the natural and built world around us. We believe every project deserves a bespoke architectural response. Successful buildings are not solely the result of good architects; a good client relationship is key to the success of our practice and the projects we undertake. We approach every project with an open mindset – by listening closely to our clients and by taking time to hone their priorities and ambitions through a process of testing, speculation and refinement – we treat the design process as an ongoing conversation with our client. As a practice, we take inspiration from related fields of industry, seeking out new technologies and construction methods to create conceptually unique buildings and interiors. Innovation is cultivated in the office through interrogating the physical limits of materials and through constantly challenging ourselves to achieve our clients brief in new and challenging ways.

Thermal Image UK

Strathaven

Thermal Image UK carries out air tightness tests and thermal imaging on new and old buildings looking for heat loss. The company was set up in 2008 by Tom Barbour and carries out surveys on a range of domestic and non-domestic buildings. Tom’s motivation is limiting climate change through better buildings, and he has been an advocate of improved building standards and quality control for a number of years. More recently, the realisation that Passivhaus not only sets a higher energy design standard but that you get built what was designed, has led to Tom becoming a strong advocate of Passivhaus.

Tim Martel

Stroud

Tim is a freelance Chartered Architectural Technologist, Passivhaus Designer and Retrofit Co-ordinator. He is an expert in PHPP and is the author of the AECB PHribbon, an add-on to PHPP that speeds up data entry, checks PHPPs and calculates the Embodied CO2 of buildings. Embodied CO2 is becoming important as the grid decarbonises and heating gradually moves towards decarbonising. What is left is mostly the Embodied CO2 of the building. He offers calculations using the software and he also sells the software on behalf of the AECB (via his own website below). He offers advanced PHPPs that use ‘variants’, a very useful standard feature from the Passivhaus Institute, that allows you to explore different options in PHPP, e.g. different roof types, different wall types or different retrofit strategies. He has also created automated sensitivity testing in PHPPs, design studies which explore the effect of changing individual parameters and also the effect of combining them together.
