Architype, are an architecture studio with a specialism in Passivhaus design across multiple sectors. Crowned the Architects Journal Top 120 Architects Sustainable Practice of the Year 2015. It was the practices overall commitment and approach to sustainability, including social and economic aspects as well as the environmental and Passivhaus credentials that clinched the award.
Architype had a great presence at the 2015 UK Passivhaus conference in London. Managing Director, Jonathan Hines, was this year’s chair. He was also a speaker at the North American Passivhaus Conference in Vancouver this October.
They have been involved in a number of pioneering Passivhaus projects, and have some interesting schemes in the pipeline, such as:
- Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre - winner of RIBA West Midlands Award & Constructing Excellence Awards for ‘Best Value Project’ and ‘Best Sustainable Project’ 2015.
- First-generation Passivhaus schools, Oak Meadow Primary and Bushbury Hill Primary. 2015 UK Passivhaus Awards winner Wilkinson Primary, a second-generation school that scooped the large project category with some convincing monitoring data. Wilkinson is a benchmark, exemplar project for Passivhaus education buildings.
- Burry Port Community Primary School; Wales’ first Passivhaus school completed in September 2015.
- the University of East Anglia’s Enterprise Centre has placed Architype firmly in the spotlight for this ambitious and ground-breaking project.
- A 33 mixed tenure Passivhaus self-build residential scheme on a brownfield site in Church Grove, Lewisham. Working for clients The Rural Urban Synthesis Society (RUSS) and designed in collaboration with Jon Broome Architects. The Church Grove site aims to become a sustainable example of how to combat the London housing crisis.
- 150 home Bridgecroft Residential Development, due to start on site in 2016.
Over the year, the practice rolled out a series of seminars, titled ‘Passivhaus Uncovered,’ which describes their approach to Passivhaus, sharing stories of past and present Passivhaus projects and lessons learned. Opinions came from a compelling list of invited speakers, from project managers and contractors who have worked with the practice, to the clients themselves.
