St John's wins AJ Architecture Housing Project of the Year Award
It is always a pleasure to see Passivhaus schemes gaining recognition at other national awards. We are delighted to announce that the finalist from the Large Residential category of this year's UK Passivhaus Awards, St John's Almshouses, has now been awarded the Architecture Journal Architecture Housing Project of the Year 2018. This is particularly encouraging as much of the key project team are new to Passivhaus!

St John's is comprosed of 18 apartments arranged around a communal garden and set within the large landscaping scheme of the historic Lichfield Grade I listed Almhouses.
The Passivhaus Standard was chosen in order to fulfill the client's vision: to provide the highest quality environment for the residents, and reflect the ingenuity of the 15th century listed buildings which were groundbreaking in their day. Although the design and detailing are contemporary, the material palette remains traditional with hand made bricks, clay plain roof tiles, copper cladding and green oak framing.
The 'low running costs' of Passivhaus played a particularly significant role in this scheme given the important social / community aspect of the sheltered housing with neighbourly support and care. The internal environment has been reported as being very comfortable, even during the 2018 summer heatwave.
