Nurturing the next generation of Passivhaus designers
Nurturing the next generation of architects and engineers and providing them with skills to tackle the climate emergency is vital. The Passivhaus Student Competition offers an excellent opportunity to create stronger connections between practice & academia, and after five successful student competitions, we are keen to continue strengthening these links.

The Trust has championed that sustainable design & energy modelling needs to be taught as standard rather than periphery optional modules. Thanks to climate emergency declarations and the climate school strikes – students are demanding more from their schools & universities. Encouragingly, there are now some newly emerging groups that are echoing this sentiment - helping to push the ‘climate curriculum’ higher up the education agenda within architecture.
Adapting to social distancing measures for the foreseeable future, the 2020 - 2021 competition will run a pared-back schedule with preference given to online delivery where possible to maintain safe teaching and Passivhaus knowledge sharing.
Get Involved
University Partners
If your University has an architecture or engineering course at post-graduate masters level with a design focus and you would like to become included in the next Passivhaus Student Competition, please read the following proposal.
In summary, each partner must provide a tutor as a dedicated contact for the competition, integrate the competition’s open brief into the students' coursework, and raise funds or find sponsorship of approximately £5,000.00 to cover Passivhaus teaching & software. We appreciate that teaching budgets may have suffered because of the current pandemic, which is why we are asking for those who may be able to do so to help with sponsorship.
Sponsorship Opportunities
Whether you would like to sponsor the whole competition or a particular University, opportunities to support the competition are available. Please contact info@passivhaustrust.org.uk to discuss proposals further.
Be sure to join us at the 2020 UK Passivhaus Conference where we shall be hearing from the winners of the recently completed competition.
Hear more about the competition at the International Passivhaus Conference on Thursday 01 October at 10.20 BST.
