The UK cannot meet its climate ambitions by focusing on new buildings alone. The greatest opportunity lies in improving the buildings we already have. Successful retrofit is rarely about chasing a single target. It is informed decision-making that achieves the best possible performance while avoiding costly mistakes and keeping future improvements open. Passivhaus retrofit provides a robust approach to delivering low-energy, comfortable and resilient buildings.

Drawing on the Passivhaus Trust's latest research and real-world case studies, this session explores how Passivhaus retrofit can be applied across housing, and non-domestic projects. From whole-building EnerPHit retrofits to carefully planned staged upgrades, our panel will examine what good retrofit looks like, how performance can be verified, and how clients can balance ambition with practical delivery.

Verifying retrofit outcomes in practice

In January 2026 the NRH published ‘Health, Place and Retrofit,’ a report setting out a vision for retrofit projects that target, measure and deliver a wide range benefits to meet direct community need. We know that, to maximise the value of retrofit investment and to meet local needs, we both need to measure direct outcomes, such as reduced bills and carbon emissions, more rigorously, and also consider a wider range of in-direct benefits, such as better comfort, creating good quality jobs, improving resident wellbeing and promoting local economic growth. If we deliver projects now, that help create a stronger retrofit system and society, we’ll be able to deliver even more in the future. At this session you will hear from organisations at the forefront of outcomes measurement innovation, who are putting these ideas into practice, in real projects.
