Why get the Qualification

On successfully passing the exam (PHI exam held 4 times per annum), participants will receive international accreditation from the Passivhaus Institut as a Certified Passive House Tradesperson (visit www.passivehouse-trades.org)

This is a theory examination but due to the inclusion of the hands-on practical training for course participants on this PHA programme, the PHI will also make note on your certificate of the hours of hands on training undergone during the course as further proof of the well rounded practical approach to the training.

 

 

Course Overview

  • Duration: 2 full days of training, delivered in one working week with additional online training
  • Format: Combination of classroom lectures and presentations as well as practical work and experience in the Passive House Workshop located at the Saint-Gobain Technical Academy in Erith, Kent and CITB Training Centre, Glasgow.
  • There will also be a number of demonstrations in different fields of Passive House, including airtightness and mechanical heat recovery ventilation.
  • Venues: The course will be delivered at the Saint-Gobain Technical Academy in Erith, Kent and CITB Glasgow
  • Trainers: Accredited and experienced trainers from PassivHaus Academy that developed the world’s first internationally accredited Passive House Tradesperson course, certified by the PassivHaus Institut (PHI).

 

 

Who Should Attend

  • This course is aimed at Building Contractors looking to learn the practical skills required of building to the world’s most efficient energy standard, namely Passive House.
  • Whilst this course is focused mainly on the challenges of the building envelope, an overview of the full range of Passive House mechanical systems will also be provided.

 

 

Learning Objectives

  • Definition of Passive House and basic principles of designing a Passive House;
  • Understand and be able to calculate U-values for opaque building envelope;
  • Understand the importance of thermal bridging and airtightness;
  • Locate the correct positioning of the airtightness and vapour barrier layer in relation to the insulation and structural layers in a range of typical construction types;
  • Demonstrate correct handling of insulation materials and describe how the integrity of insulation is affected when badly installed or damaged;
  • Perform the highest quality fixing of a range of insulation materials to different construction types;
  • Outline the steps and procedures involved in the performance of an airtightness test using the Passive House methodology;
  • Demonstrate correct airtightness treatment at door and window openings, service penetrations, joints vertically and horizontally, corners and where the wall meets other constructional elements;
  • Outline the methods available for avoiding thermal bridging including information on any proprietary products used to assist the process;
  • Identify suitable Passive House glazing and frame types and compare them to those commonly used in the construction of a dwelling to past and current building standards;
  • Practice optimal fitting techniques and associated thermal bridge values for Passive House suitable window and door installations in different construction types;
  • Identify and accurately interpret data from the PHPP files to determine construction details;
  • Passive House mechanical systems, including heat recovery ventilation equipment design, sizing, installation and maintenance;
  • Ventilation ducting in Passive House projects and ensuring high performance in terms of airtight and highly insulated penetrations; and
  • Supplementary heating in Passive Houses, technologies, sizing and installation.

  • Recommended:  Package of (a) 2 day training plus (b) 2 day on-line course preparing attendees to take the internationally accredited exam - £740 (Inc VAT)

  • 2 day Passive House and  practical course at the Erith tradesperson training workshop - £475 (Inc Vat)

  • Deferred signing-up for the 2 day on-line course to prepare for the exam - £350 (VAT Exempt)

  • Does not include Exam fee @ £210 (Inc VAT) per person
