What’s the Course Format?
• Studied over two weeks mainly classroom based course. The course is run over a two-week period that is delivered in modules as shown below
• Local site visits (where available) to different build stage Passivhaus sites.
• Bespoke Courses available for in-house learning.
The Trainers
• Andrew Fisher – Whole House Energy, Passivhaus Consultant - Andrew has designed and delivered numerous Passivhaus projects in the area and is currently working on some large scale, multi-residential schemes.
• Sarah Lewis – Barron and Smith Architects (previously Bere Architects) Sarah is an award winning architect and author of the internationally renowned book PHPP Illustrated, published by the RIBA. Sarah is involved throughout the course as she delivers the all-important module PHPP. Delivered using her own methodology, and a real life case study, Sarah demystifies the PHPP, making learning easy and fun.
• Chris Parsons – Parsons + Whittley Architects - Chris has delivered multiple award winning Passivhaus projects in the UK. For more information about these visit the Parsons + Whittley website. Chris has huge expertise and experience of multiple build solutions and takes the lead on the building envelope module.
• Alex Honey – Whole House Energy, Passivhaus Designer - Alex has delivered a number of Passivhaus projects in the last 7 years. He is a self confessed geek and delivers the Science of Passivhaus module.
• Adam Simpson – Clear Consulting and Design Ltd, Director - Adam is our M&E expert and can draw from his personal experience of delivering a wide range of projects, from bespoke Passivhaus buildings to commercial scale developments.
• Jackie Richards – Whole House Energy – Consultant - Jackie delivers the introduction to Passivhaus module. She is currently designing her own Passivhaus in the city of Norwich.
Overview
Week 1 (5 days duration) 9.00am - 5.00pm
Monday 9th May - 1 day - Introduction to Passivhaus and Economics
Day one is spent first with a policy update before moving on to understanding the principles behind a Passivhaus and how this translates into the design tool PHPP. An introduction to the economics of Passivhaus and the business case for buildings of this type.
Tuesday/Wednesday10th /11th May - 2 days - Science of Passivhaus
The science behind Passivhaus is delivered by Alex Honey and Andrew Fisher. You will start with a gentle warm up of maths and unit manipulation before you will learn what it takes to achieve the Passivhaus standard.
Thursday/Friday 12th/13th May - 2 days - PHPP
Sarah Lewis talks us through the PHPP v9 and its variations. Using the methodology of her book 'PHPP Illustrated', Sarah will guide you through the not diminutive Excel workbook sheets and demistify the process.
Week 2 (3 days duration) 9.00am - 5.00pm
Monday 23rd May - 1 day - Building Envelope
Chris will deliver the module that looks at the fabric and details that will ensure delivery of a Passivhaus building, whilst simultaneously seeing how this is achieved in the PHPP.
Tuesday/Wednesday 24th/25th May- 2 days- Building Services
Adam will explain the why's and how's of building services to include ventilation, heating and cooling, whilst as above, the PHPP is referenced throughout.
3rd June - 9.00am-5.00pm
½ day Revision - A morning of revising and practicing exam technique and questions.
½ day Examination- 3 hour open book written examination.
Outcomes
• Certified Passivhaus Designer/Consultant Qualification (Passivhaus Institute endorsed) and Certificate
• Listed on the Passivhaus Institute website.
Examination
• 180-minute open book exam.
• Next Examination date/s: 3rd June/8th October 2016.
Entry Requirements
Provision of full CV demonstrating suitable experience and/or qualification.
RIBA/CIAT/CIBSE registration details would provide evidence of experience with low-energy building design/energy calculations.
