Battersea Passivhaus high-rise underway
A large-scale London student accommodation development aiming for Passivhaus has received planning permission and is now underway.
Private student accommodation provider Urbanest, the same client behind the Canary Wharf development, has commissioned architects AHMM to create Passivhaus certified accommodation for 850 students, alongside commercial office space at a redevelopment site in Battersea, London.
Urbanest Battersea is a mixed-use redevelopment of a site at Palmerston Court in Nine Elms, Battersea. The proposed design will replace the four existing buildings on the site with three student accommodation blocks aiming for Passivhaus, and a commercial office building, ranging in height from 11 to 19 storeys. At the base of the buildings, the development will include new affordable enterprise business space, a new public house and retail space.
The whole development, except the office block and the pub, is being developed to Passivhaus design. The scope of buildings achieving full Passivhaus certification will be agreed as the project progresses. The project aims to deliver a car-free development the new commercial building targeting BREEAM Outstanding, supporting Wandsworth Council in delivering its Carbon Neutral Strategy.

We aim to deliver the most energy-efficient mixed-use scheme in the UK. The Passivhaus Standard is a proven method to deliver a high level of occupant comfort whilst using very little energy for heating and cooling. In simple terms, a Passivhaus building has a tiny operational demand; it is more energy-efficient and more comfortable to live and work in. We all spend a significant amount of time indoors, and as such, buildings play a large part in our health and wellbeing. Introducing Passivhaus will assist in achieving BREEAM Outstanding for the student accommodation.
