Passivhaus Trust at Ecobuild

The panel share a light moment during the Fringe session.

Passivhaus was definitely the buzzword at Ecobuild this year and as the frontline of Passivhaus promotion in the UK the Passivhaus Trust was at the heart of the buzz. The Trust was in the North hall just behind the SIPS Passive house, and was constantly awash with people asking about the Passivhaus standard and the Trust’s role and wanting to know how they could build or refurbish homes to Passivhaus standards.

Many of the Passivhaus Members helped out on the stand, and we were very grateful for their support, especially as the stand was so busy. We also found out about a number of new projects being built to Passivhaus standards, apparently including a care home and a 400-home site in Norfolk – we’ll let you know more once we’ve tracked them down!

The Passivhaus trust also ran a fringe session titled 'Driving Passivhaus delivery in the UK' with Dr Wolfgang Feist, the founder of the Passivhaus Institute in Germany, as the guest speaker. A panel of UK experts, including Passivhaus Trust chair Chris HerringDavid Strong, Jonathan Hines and Sally Godber addressed a series of questions about why the Passivhaus Standard works well in the UK and the event saw a packed room with people standing at the back.

Jon Bootland (Chief Executive) and Neil Cutland (Director) of the Trust, spoke to another packed room with around 200 people at the seminar on ‘Aligning Passivhaus Principles with Codes and Regulations’ and Melissa Taylor, Technical Manager at the Trust spoke alongside Trust members Rob Prewett and Justin Bere at the ‘Passivhaus Principles in Refurbishment’ seminar on ‘The new Passivhaus Refurbishment Standard EnerPHit from the Passivhaus Institute’(due to be released in June).

And finally, Passivhaus Trust Technical Director, Nick Grant was among the judges along with Dr Feist and other leading industry experts to judge UK entries in the 2011 Isover Multi-Comfort House competition. The brief encompassed Passive House performance levels to create a tower which works on a practical level, enhancing the surrounding area and providing a comfortable and efficient multi-use environment.  The winning scheme was Green Canyons by Ankur Modi, Suruchi Modi and Chuyu. See all the winning entries here.
