From a Royal Opening to the RIBA Stage: Passivhaus's Award-Winning Summer

UK Passivhaus projects won recognition at the RIBA National Awards, Unlock Net Zero Awards and Housing Design Awards this summer, capped by a royal opening.

In July, King Charles III opened the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities at the University of Oxford, home to the world's first Passivhaus-certified concert venue. It's a fitting capstone to a summer in which Passivhaus projects and practitioners were recognised across several architecture awards, spanning social housing, student accommodation, heritage buildings and schools. Passivhaus is no longer competing only on energy performance. It's winning on architectural merit.

A royal opening for the world's first Passivhaus concert hall

The King officially opened the Schwarzman Centre on 10 July 2026, touring the 500-seat Sohmen Concert Hall, the world's first concert venue built to the Passivhaus standard. RIBA national awards 2026: three Passivhaus wins

Three Passivhaus-certified buildings won RIBA regional awards this year, each demonstrating the standard's reach across very different building types:

South West & Wessex: Purdown View, Stride Treglown's 900-bed Passivhaus-certified accommodation for the University of the West of England in Bristol, is the largest Passivhaus-certified development in the UK. PHT case study →

London: Plashet Road in Newham, designed by Levitt Bernstein for Newham Council, delivers 65 affordable Passivhaus-certified homes and a nursery, the borough's first Passivhaus scheme. It also won the RIBA London Sustainability Award outright. PHT case study →

South: The Spencer Building at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, by Wright & Wright Architects, is one of the UK's first Grade I listed buildings to achieve full Passivhaus certification: a special collections library built into a medieval city wall and 16th-century Garden Quad. PHT case study →

Recognising the people and councils behind the standard

Passivhaus delivery depends on individuals and organisations who champion it for years before a building is complete, and the Unlock Net Zero Awards 2026 recognised two of them:

Marion Baeli of 10 Design, a Passivhaus Trust board member, was named to the Climate Champions Power List for her retrofit advocacy.

Haringey Council was named Organisation of the Year: People and Services for its work delivering Passivhaus homes across London. PHT case study →

Housing Design Awards and a clean sweep in York

Three further Passivhaus and Passivhaus-targeting schemes were shortlisted for the 2026 Housing Design Awards: Duncombe Square & Burnholme Green in York (targeting Passivhaus, delivered for York City Council), Farmstead Road in Lewisham (targeting PHI Low Energy Building for Phoenix Community Housing), and Melfield Gardens, also in Lewisham for Phoenix Community Housing, which is fully Passivhaus certified.

Duncombe Square went on to sweep the York Design Awards 2026, taking the Sustainability Award, the Multi-Residential Award and the Lord Mayor's Award. PHT case study →

Beyond housing: a Passivhaus school in Scotland

Recognition wasn't limited to housing. Perth High School, one of the first and largest Passivhaus schools in Scotland, won the Sustainability Award at the Single Ply Roofing Association Awards 2026, recognising the airtightness and thermal performance of its roofing system.
