Here is what some of our members had to say about their experince of helping out at the Passivhaus Trust Stand at Ecobuild:

‘As someone who is keen to see an increasing promotion of the Passivhaus standard in the UK, I thought that the Trust’s the stand at Ecobuild provided an excellent opportunity to make contact with people who commission or may commission buildings, as well as those involved in the construction industry.  It was a challenge, however, to present the integrity of the Passivhaus standard within an environment that appeared to contain so much ‘greenwash’.’

-Andrew Goodman, Good Architecture

‘I thoroughly enjoyed being able to help and support the Passivhaus Trust at Ecobuild as it gave me an opportunity to find out the level of understanding that the general public and industry professionals had about Passivhaus principles and its implications on the built form. I was surprised by how little people really knew about what Passivhaus really meant but also how keen they were to find out more. They knew that it was a very low energy building but were not clear as to how they could achieve it or what designers/specifies/products/building systems there were available to them to help them do so.I think the trust now has to create a database of companies that can help visitors to the site find the companies that can deliver these buildings. We need to educate and inform the professionals and the public alike on how to embrace Passivhaus principles and encourage them to build more fully approved Passivhaus buildings being either residential, commercial, health or educational.’

- David Craddock, EBS Elk

‘A thoroughly enjoyable opportunity to pass on a little knowledge on the phenomenon that is the Passivhaus standard. It was wonderful to be able to introduce its principles to people who had never even heard of Passivhaus, and to talk at length with those already on board. It was also presently surprising to meet so many people aiming for Passivhaus Certification in their own future projects, and even a plucky few taking the jump to becoming Certified European Passivhaus Designers. Most of all it was a chance to take a step back from the PHPP modelling and thermal bridge calculations and to participate in the wider debate. Thanks to the work of the trust, there will be devoted people carrying on these talks after Ecobuild has finished, and we’re all back at our drawing boards.’

'Helping on the Passivhaus Trust stand at Ecobuild 2011 provided an opportunity to gauge the current interest in the Passivhaus standard. The fact there was hardly a quiet moment in time I was on the stand is indeed an encouraging sign. It was also pleasing that the standard is attracting a broad interest, the people I spoke with including self builders, designers, contractors, students, engineers, individuals, developers and even community groups. Some visitors had only heard of Passivhaus, so wanted to know more about the standard and how it compares with current building regulations and the Code for Sustainable Homes. Others were already considering or engaged in Passivhaus projects and wanted to know what the trust had to offer. Some were interested in whether the standard could be applied to retrofit projects, for whom the development of the EnerPHit standard was of interest. All in all, the numbers of visitors and enthusiasm for the standard bode well for the future of Passivhaus in the UK.'

‘I was on the Passivhaus trust stand on Tuesday afternoon and was absolutely amazed by just how busy it was and how may people were interested in building a Passivhaus, for two hours it was non stop and as soon as one person left and other came in their place. Lots of the people I spoke to were individuals who were looking to build their own house and wanted information on the standard and how to get in contact with people who could help them, others wanted to talk about schemes they were working on and quite a few people were interested in joining.

Passivhaus was definitely the thing at Ecobuild so lets hope this interest will generate more members for the trust and helps build it for even bigger and better things.’

‘The stand was really busy with lots of interest from professionals, self builders and students alike.’

-Rachel Wichall, Ecoframe systems

‘I couldn’t believe the level of interest, having been working for the rest of the time at Ecobuild on another stand (Lime Technology) and that people were happy to fill in the form there and then to sign up. Also some good opportunities for arguments, you always get the odd folk who want to prove the principals wrong which tests the grey matter!!’
