Wolfgang Feist to visit UK to receive RIBA Honorary Fellowship

The founder of Passivhaus- the world’s leading low energy building standard, Prof. Wolfgang Feist will be awarded a RIBA Honorary fellowship for his contribution to sustainable architecture through his work on Passivhaus, at a highly prestigious event to be held at RIBA, London on 6th February 2013.

During his trip to the UK, Prof Wolfgang Feist will also be visiting the latest exemplar Passivhaus sites around Norfolk and London, organised by the Passivhaus Trust and its Patron members.

Prof. Wolfgang Feist, Director of the Pasivhaus Institut, Darmstadt said, "I feel extremely honoured to have been selected for such a prestigious award from such a highly regarded organisation as the Royal Institute of British Architects. The extent to which the Passivhaus Standard supports good architecture has been demonstrated by their recognition of my work in the field. High levels of energy efficiency and excellent architectural design go hand in hand, with all building shapes and styles possible. The increasing availability of high quality components for the building envelope is making this ever more apparent and stands as one of the key fields of the Passivhaus Institut's ongoing research.

This award also confirms that Passivhaus has become established in the UK with many Passivhaus buildings already built throughout the country. This number is on the rise. Such buildings represent an important contribution to sustainability and the preservation of resources while offering both economic benefits and superior levels of comfort."

Prof Wolfgang Feist will be visiting the following exemplar Passivhaus sites:

Chester Balmore, London (Under Construction) - UK’s largest Passivhaus scheme with 53 homes being developed for Camden Council by Willmott Dixon and designed by Architype and Rick Mather Architects.

Ditchingham Passivhaus, Norfolk (Completed September 2012) - Hastoe Housing Association’s second Passivhaus scheme after the successful Wimbish Passivhaus scheme. The 14 homes have been designed by Parsons & Whittley and are set in a conservation area adjacent to important Tayler & Green listed buildings.

Norwich Research Park Enterprise Centre, UEA, Norwich (Planning) – This exemplar project is expected to be a flagship project for the region, maximising the use of local materials and stimulating the local economy and driving innovation in the low carbon sector. The Project team includes Morgan Sindall, Architype, BDP, BSRIA, Churchman Landscape Architects, Stephen Letch- Chair of East Anglian Master Thatchers and Warm Associates.

He will be accompanied by members of the respective project teams and the Trust and will also present the Ditchingham team with their ‘Certified Passivhaus’ certificate.

Prof. Feist will also be giving a talk at the UEA, hosted by Adapt CBE, on 5th February about Passivhaus application to different building types, supply chains and practices across Europe offering a chance for questions and debate with regards to the UK context.

This UK visit follows on from Prof Feist’s visit last summer where he conducted a series of Passivhaus Masterclasses across the UK and presented the first UK Passivhaus Award winners with their awards.
