Comfort conditions of Mayville Community Centre compared with those of 2 uninsulated flats on the adjacent estate
This study conducted by Bere Architects compares the comfort conditions in November 2012 inside the unheated Mayville Community Centre- a Certified Passivhaus, with conditions in two heated, un-insulated post war flats on the adjacent Mayville Estate.
The study concluded that the completely unheated Mayville Community Centre, even in its main double-height volume, was effortlessly maintaining higher temperatures of 22-24 degrees and optimum humidity conditions completely free of any condensation. On the other hand, the two post-war flats had to be heated constantly during the day to maintain a temperature between 15-2- degrees with severe condensation reported on the walls and windows.
The residents of the Mayville Estate also said they were having difficulty affording the expense of heating their standard post war flats to temperatures between 15-20 degrees, even in November. This demonstrates how the application of retrofit Passivhaus measures could help to alleviate fuel poverty.
