Architype submits planning application for 150 new Passivhaus homes in Herefordshire
PHT Founder Architype have submitted a planning application for 150 Passivhaus homes in Kingstone, south-west Herefordshire. The scheme aims to ‘transform both the quality and sustainability of developer housing in the UK’.
The scheme will be developed by Archihaus, a new company that has been formed by Jonathan Hines and Lars Carlsson, in partnership with Architype. The scheme is expected to deliver heating costs as low as £70 per year for a three-bed house.
The houses have been designed to complement both the character of the rural area and Passivhaus, resulting in house plans that are shallower in depth and wider in frontage than typical developer houses, creating a more spacious, open plan and flexible layout.
Clusters of houses would also be set within a landscape of winding lanes and native hedgerows, swales and wetlands, and generous green community open space featuring allotments and orchards.
Jonathan Hines, Director of Architype, said: “It has been a liberating experience to rethink our role as architects and tackle the issue of housing development from first principles. I hope that this scheme will establish a new benchmark in housing development, by demonstrating that better design quality and Passivhaus can be achieved as standard.”
Architype also reports that Herefordshire Council's Draft Core Strategy (March 2013) encourages Passivhaus and states 'Developments that achieve 'Passivhaus' accreditation will be encouraged, where there will be no significant landscape, townscape or visual imapct".
The Core Strategy is a key document in the Local Plan, which shapes future development and sets the overall strategic planning framework for the county. It sets a clear vision, closely aligned with the Herefordshire Sustainable Community Strategy (June 2010) as to how the county should look and function and how development needs will be met up to 2031.
