Cotswolds Passivhaus approved despite original refusal from planners

IID Architects proposed designs for a home built to certified Passivhaus standards has been granted planning permission despite local planning officers originally refusing the proposal. The planning committee ignored the advice for Long Barrow after receiving over 40 letters of support from the local communiy.

The architects usually specialise in school design and Long Barrow will be their first Passivhaus and residential development. The project will be used as a test case to see if the practice can incorporate Passivhaus design techniques into their future school designs.

The clients are experienced M&E consultants with whom IID has a well-established working relationship and who were keen to build a highly sustainable home on the family farm.

They wanted to use local materials in a contemporary design and ultimately settled on a partially earth-sheltered solution which derived its form from the prehistoric ‘long barrows’ which are characteristic of the area” Bernard GreenWalker, IID Associate

Sustainability features of the 350m2 four-bed house include:

  • Design to meet both Passivhaus and CfSH Level 6 standards.
  • A unique hybrid of photo-voltaic thermal (PVT) and an air-source heat pump to achieve zero-carbon status.

The scheme is now progressing to detailed design and work could start on site before the end of the year.
