Encraft Passivhaus event attracts Registered Social Landlords, LA's and private landlords
Over 80 delegates attend the Encraft Passivhaus Conference for Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) and Local Authorities (LAs) in Birmingham on 30 May 2014.
The conference focused on best practice and lessons from UK Passivhaus projects, and was aimed at clients, building owners and project developers including RSLs, LAs and private landlords.
PHT Associate Director Kym Mead provided a brief introduction to this fastest growing energy performance standard in the world. Kym also touched upon the uptake of Passivhaus in the UK and described the activities of the Trust.
- James Halsall from mae Architects and Andrew McDermott from Camden Borough Council spoke about large scale Passivhaus developments of Chester Balmore and Agar Grove schemes in Camden.
- Steve Groves from Portsmouth City Council presented on the Wilmcote House project – refurbishment of three, multi-residential, eleven storey buildings to meet EnerPHit standard – the Passivhaus retrofit standard.
- Martin Montgomery of Gumpp & Maier UK presented on retrofitting social housing maisonettes at Parkview Hub, Thamesmead to EnerPHit standard – a project to reduce tenants’ average heating bills from £40/week to £4/week.
- Nittai Edelmann of 2e Architects and Certified Passivhaus Designer Eric Parks highlight the importance of attention to detail by contractors and appointing an on-site air tightness champion on Enerley Close EnerPHit.
- Chris Parsons from Parsons + Whittley Architects talked about Wimbish Passivhaus scheme – the first rural scheme to receive certification in the UK. Chris emphasised on the need to effectively induct tenants in a Passivhaus in his presentation. Brian Carroll from Hastoe Housing Association, gave a clients perspective on drivers and costs associated with adopting the Passivhaus standard
- Richard Gawthorpe from Beattie Passive Norse described his patented timber-frame build system that can easily be erected by semi-skilled labour in short time and meets the Passivhaus standard for buildings of any size of shape to deliver Passivhaus buildings for all, not just a few
- Helen Brown from Encraft presented on the whole-life costs of Passivhaus – concluding that in most cases the whole-life costs of houses built to Passivhaus standards are lower than those of traditional homes. Attention was focused on avoiding the potential pitfalls of Passivhaus – particularly focusing on the Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery (MVHR) system, Responsible Retrofit, Air Tightness, and Quality Control.
