The importance of Certification

PHT Associate Director Kym Mead is also a certifier at MEAD Energy & Architectural Design, and was recently published in Passive House Plus magazine stating his opinions on the importance of Certification. Based upon his experience he believes involving certifiers at the design stage can deliver cost savings and avoid mistakes being made.

It’s about quality assurance.... Its about peace of mind for the the client. Its always advisable to have the building checked over and signed off at the design stage, so any feedback can be incorporated easily and cost effectively. Kym Mead.

He goes on to say that Passivhaus certification is essentially a third party audit, making sure that something hasn't been missed. It provides the following:

  • Quality assurance and rigourous post construcion testing.

  • Verifies an exemplar benchmark for best practice that alleviates the performance gap.

  • Provides protection of the integrity of the standard.

With the increase of the uptake of the standard in the UK, there is greater reflection placed upon the later. Mead believes only certified projects can claim Passivhaus standard, while others that may meet PHPP targets are deemed ‘Passivhaus principles.’

The Trust support use of the terms "Certified Passivhaus" if a building has been certified and "Passivhaus" if it has not been certified but meets the requirements of our document "what it means to claim the Passivhaus standard in the UK".

For those that claim the hefty price tag of certification a deterent, Mead counters that when compared to other associated build costs per meter squared, it is actually one of the cheapest things to do.
