Cost-effective Energy Measures Bill

A few weeks ago we asked you to lobby your MPs to attend an event about a campaign that aims to persuade the Government that “Cost effective energy measures”, including energy efficiency, should be a National Infrastructure Priority i.e. given high importance in legislation.

Since then, things have moved very quickly:

  1. A coalition of energy-related organisations, including the Trust, AECB, SEA & CIBSE amongst others, has come together to propose a Bill on “Cost effective energy measures in buildings”. This covers both renewables and energy efficiency, and asks for the Government to adopt such energy measures as a National Infrastructure Priority.

  2. A meeting was held where 60+ MPs committed their support.

  3. A number of MP’s have been selected as candidates for a Private Members’ Bill (see list below). Realistically, the top 7 get the chance to put a Bill forward, if they can garner enough support from other MPs. The coalition is hoping that one of these selectees can be persuaded to adopt the “Energy Measures” Bill.

This is where you can help!

Over the next few weeks, we are asking members whose MP is one of the top 7 selected (see list below) to contact their MP to ask them to adopt the Bill. By the end of June, this process should be resolved and we should know whether or not we’ve been successful. If yes, then we will obviously ask our members to undertake further lobbying of their MPs to garner support for the Bill itself.

Selected MP’s

  • Chris Heaton-Harris: @chhcalling - Daventry (Conservative)

  • Gerald Howarth: @geraldhowarth - Aldershot (Conservative)

Read more about why the cost-effective energy measures bill is needed here. If you are a constituent of any of these MPs, either at work or at home, then please contact us to discuss how best to make contact and support the Bill. Alternatively, please refer to the linked documents when contacting your MP.

Although the proposed Bill is not Passivhaus-specific, making energy efficiency into a National Infrastructure Priority would help increase the policy and regulatory profile of energy efficiency, so we are keen to support the work of the coalition!
