'How to build a Passivhaus' is online

The Passivhaus Trust's new knowledge base is now live and features the latest guidance and rules of thumb from industry experts with knowledge of UK based projects.

The initial content of the knowledge base been sourced from our latest publication - 'How to build a Passivhaus - Rule of Thumb'. We hope to expand and compliment this collection of information through continuing input from industry experts and user-submitted guidance from PHT members, highlighting key lessons learnt during the design and build of their Passivhaus projects.

Peer-reviewed guidance for planning through to operation

The knowledge base has been split across four sections to include the planning, design, construction and operation stages.

The topics that are currently covered in the knowledge base include:

  • Fabric - Airtightness, Junctions and thermal bridges, Whole building systems, Walls, Roofs and Floors, Windows and doors

  • Process - Construction and quality assurance, Design approach and system choices, PHPP, Certification and quality assurance, Handover, maintenance and comfort, Shading and avoiding overheating

  • Services - MVHR, Heating and hot water, Solar thermal and PV, Building services

The peer-reviewed guidance notes will provide more in-depth guidance and have been written by Passivhaus practitioners who are experts in their field.

 

Rules of thumb - Dos and dont's

The rules of thumb have been developed to act as short, sharp pointers to reference when designing and building your Passivhaus project. 

 

Case studies, publications, design details and further reading

This is where you will find case studies of Passivhaus projects, design details that have been used in certified buildings and links to further publications, guidance, research, books and websites that may help to inform your decisions when building a Passivhaus.
