Register for the right to build
As of April 2016, local councils in England are legally obliged to maintain a list of people interested in building their own home. Councils in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland may follow suit in due course.
The ‘Right to Build’, part of the Self and Custom Build Housing Act 2015, requires local authorities to ensure there is adequate land provision for those who have registered interest to build their own home.
Once the Housing and Planning Bill gains Royal Assent, it will help clarify what the councils’ obligations are, and how the provision of plots suitable for custom and self-build are provided.
The Trust encourage anyone interested in building their own home, regardless of whether it aspires to meet Passivhaus or not, to register their self-build interest with their local authority.
The Right to Build Portal (a site set up by the National Custom and Self Build Association) can help you find the relevant links and information for your council. Please be aware, some authorities are yet to open a formal registration.
If you are thinking about building your home to the Passivhaus Standard, and would like more information, keep an eye on the Trust's new custom & self-build campaign Passivhaus goes personal.
