Grow old in comfort: 80 extra care homes aiming for Passivhaus
An 80 home extra care development aiming for Passivhaus, designed by PHT Patron Architype, has secured Outline Planning Permission located in Whitestone, rural Herefordshire.
The development hopes to address the shortage of suitable housing for older people, offering residents an active and healthy lifestyle as well as high quality homes for life.

Passivhaus has been used to minimise energy bills, maximise daylight, and create stable temperatures & highly comfortable internal conditions all year round, which is often critical for the health of older people.
The development will consist of:
- One, two and three bedroom homes designed with a communal focus, promoting natural surveillance for neighbouring residents, supported by a live-in warden to aid independent living.
- On-site communal leisure facilities, including a swimming pool, sauna, and croquet green.
- Potential provision for a café, shop, hair salon.
- Medical and wellness facilities.
- Library, IT room, and craft room.
- Landscaped gardens responding to established trees and ten new allotments.
The scheme will encourage a healthy and active lifestyle and a strong sense of community. A detailed design will be developed with the expert advice of specialist care providers.
