We are hiring! Research, Policy, Education Director

The Passivhaus Trust is growing rapidly. We are seeking someone to help shape the future direction of the Trust and play a pivotal senior role in its management and development. 


Who we're looking for

We are looking for an experienced leader who wants to play a pivotal role in helping to deliver the low carbon buildings needed to address the climate and ecological emergency. You will have:

  • minimum qualifications of a relevant degree

  • at least 5-10 years’ relevant work experience

  • good technical knowledge and excellent writing skills

  • strong communication and leadership skills

  • expertise in one or more of the roles outlined above.

  • knowledge of low energy building policies & practices 


The role

The Passivhaus Trust is growing rapidly and will play a pivotal role in the delivery of zero carbon buildings over the next ten years; the person we are looking for will help shape the future direction of the Trust and will ideally play a senior and increasing role in its management and development. Initially the role will include a focus on at least one, and probably two of the following areas, depending on the successful applicant’s balance of expertise and experience:

  1. Research & Standards and/or
  2. Policy and/or
  3. Education

These could be combined in any arrangement to suit the successful applicant(s), and could be part-time, full-time, secondments or job shares, depending on the final candidate(s)

Research & Standards

  • Managing technical working groups and overseeing preparation of technical papers & guides
  • Planning, development and fundraising for the Trust’s research & guidance projects

  • Collaboration with universities and Passivhaus practitioners on latest research topics
  • Liaison with the Passivhaus Institute and iPHA about the development of the PH standards
  • Engagement with UK certifiers about application of the PH standards in the UK
  • Supervising monitoring of UK Passivhaus project performance
  • Managing complaints relating to Trust members
  • Responding to technical queries
  • Plus activities common to all 3 roles (see item 4 below)


  • Preparing PHT position papers & content for associated materials (presentations, animations, videos), for example on “Passivhaus and net zero” or “Passivhaus and the retrofit challenge”

  • Engagement with key policy makers (e.g. BEIS, MHCLG, Scottish & Welsh Govt) to promote the PH approach
  • Engagement with local authorities and key client bodies (e.g. DfE, Housing Associations) to support their policy development & promote PH
  •  Liaison with other policy groups (e.g. LETI, ACAN) to encourage their adoption of PH
  • Monitor policy papers to determine their relevance to PH and preparation of draft responses
  • ·Attendance and presentations at relevant policy events


  • Developing and managing the Trust’s education & training strategy
  • Organising and managing PHT training sessions (live or online) e.g. masterclasses, client procurement tutorials, student training/ competitions etc
  • Collaborating with universities and other training organisations, to increase the adoption of Passivhaus training in their courses
  • Developing and managing an endorsement/ QA review process for PH training run by others
  • Engaging with the UK Passivhaus Training group & others to increase the coverage and quality of PH training
  • Liaising with funding bodies to identify potential funding sources for the creation and ongoing provision of Passivhaus related training

Contract Details

The role will be a permanent PAYE position, but we are happy to consider flexible arrangements, such as part-time working, job-shares, or secondments for appropriate candidates. Salary approx. £50,000 - £65,000 FTE, more for an exceptional candidate.

2021 PHT Research, Policy, Education Director Job specification

The job is remote working for the foreseeable future, with weekly team meetings via zoom. Training & support will be provided via various team members for the first month, which will then be reviewed. The role is beginning in January 2021. Depending on experience, salary will be approx. £20,000 - £25,000 FTE. For the right candidate, the role can be negotiated to either a full time or part-time role (between 2/5 days per week), pro rata according to days worked.


The role will be predominantly based with the Passivhaus Trust, however there is the opportunity to also work with the London Energy Transformative Initiative (LETI), a network of built environment professionals working towards a zero-carbon built environment, for 1.5 days per week under the same contract. You will have one main point of contact within LETI and provide support with:

·       Internal communications within the LETI taskforce and working groups

·       External communications with the LETI mailing list

·       Organising LETI events and coordinating LETI speakers’ external events.

·       Updating the LETI website

·       Maintaining the LETI contact database

·       Supporting social media platforms such as twitter and LinkedIn

·       Overseeing the LETI admin email account and directing enquiries
