Every year, the RIBA Regional Awards brings together architects from across the UK to celebrate the best of the best in construction. Entries span across a variety of project sectors and are judged and presented locally, region by region.

As a rigorous and robust Standard for high-performance buildings, Passivhaus provides a reliable route to meeting climate targets in construction. With climate-forward schemes high on the judge's agenda, it has been great to see Passivhaus projects winning in both London and the North-East, recognising exemplary architecture needn't compromise people or the planet.

It was exciting to see multiple Passivhaus projects, both newbuild and retrofit, winning prizes at the RIBA Regional Awards, providing recognition of the excellent comfort, health and energy efficiency performance of Passivhaus buildings. All we need now is for Passivhaus or equivalent methodologies to become the norm and we might start making progress towards our climate emergency goals!

Whilst it's personally gratifying to be recognised by fellow architects and an honour to be associated with this award-winning project, when we are faced with a climate and biodiversity emergency, I’m more excited to think about how the project and these awards can be used to raise the profile of what good architecture is today and what it should be in the future.

Winners of the RIAS Awards, for which the Ostro Passivhaus has been shortlisted, will be announced on 6 June.
