Housing comes in all shapes and sizes and Passivhaus can apply to any building typology. Here we outline alternative housing case studies from cohousing schemes to care homes and everything in between.

Cohousing & Community Land Trusts

Housing for the people, by the people! A growing number of cohousing & Community Land Trust schemes are adopting Passivhaus.

Cohousing schemes are growing in popularity in the UK, and are intentional communitties of private homes clustered around shared space. Shared spaces typically feature a common house, which may include a large kitchen and dining area, laundry, and recreational spaces.  Resources, such as tools and lawnmowers, are often shared.

Community Land Trusts (CLT's) are democratic, non profit organisations that own and develop land for the benefit of the community. They typically provide affordable homes, community gardens, civic buildings, pubs, shops, shared workspace, energy schemes and conservation landscapes.

Adopting the Passivhaus standard for energy-intensive care homes and extra care units is beginning to take off in the UK, with early adopters including the Juniper House and the Edward's Court projects, with many more in the pipeline.
